I belong to a local CSA co-op (CSA = Community Supported Agriculture). It's one of my favorite things about living near a rural area. My co-op, SIW Veggies (the SIW stands for Stepped in What), is located on Route 100 in Chadds Ford, PA, and has been in business for eight years.
Here's how it works: each winter, I pay a membership fee and then, from late June through the end of October, I stop by the farm once a week to collect a bag of fun new produce to try out. When you arrive at the stand, there's a sign telling you what you're supposed to pick up, kind of like a veggie version of "Where's Waldo"? Sometimes there are funny things listed - one time, it read "kitten," because there were some newborn kitties in the barn that were free to CSA members - and sometimes you'll find unique produce you've never even heard of. A recent example was garlic scapes, which turned out to be the top of the garlic plant and a delicious addition to any stir fry.
SIW is best known for its 65 varieties of heirloom tomatoes and sweet corn, but I haven't been disappointed by anything I've gotten to take home through this wonderful program. I love taking the fresh, beautiful fruit and veggies and incorporating them into our meals throughout the week!

In addition to the produce, you can buy some specialty prepared foods. I love to splurge on their homemade tomato sauce, which at $9 a jar may seem pricey but is worth every single penny. Plus, CSA members get a little discount! So. Good. |
